Equation	What it means	Variables involved
P = I^2 * R	The power that is dissipated by a component as heat; Also can be considered the power required for the component. Do not exceed this on the component;	P = power rating; I = current passing through component; R = resistance of component;

Power rating

The power rating of an electrical component must exceed the power dissipated through that component:

P = I^2 * R

where P is the power rating, I is the current, and R is the resistance.
